How to green-clean your floors (with $100 giveaway!)

This contest is now closed and Tabitha is our winner!

I have wood floors throughout my house.  I love the fact that they can whether spills and dirt without leaving stains. But I don’t love how filthy they can look after a day of my kids running through the house.

It seems like I am always searching for the perfect way to clean them.  I used a device with a washable fabric cover for a while, but it was cumbersome having to hold a spray can in one hand while I was scrubbing with the other.  My housekeeper, who comes twice a month, uses an old-school mop – this is great for the occasional deep-cleaning but I usually clean my floors multiple times a day.  Rigging up a mop seems like a lot of effort.

Lately I’ve been relying on Swiffer pads.  It’s great that they have the cleaning solution already soaked in to the pad, but one pad only covers a small area, and I don’t love some of the chemical involved, or the fact that I am spending so much money on a pad that will just get thrown away.

I was really excited to try the Libman Freedom Spray Mop, because I had heard it was a great alternative to these methods.  The Libman mop is similar to a Swiffer system, except that the pad is washable.  And – here’s the kicker – you can use whatever solution you want to clean your floors.  So if you want to stay green and chemical-free, you can mix up a vinegar-based solution instead of a store-bought version.
I am pretty smitten with the Libman system, for the following reasons:

  • It Is Green.  There are no pads to through away, and no harsh chemicals involved.
  • It Is Cheap. The solution I made to clean my entire house was made of 1 cup of vinegar mixed into warm water, and I only used a fraction of the solution.  A bottle of white vinegar is under a dollar, and I can throw the pad into the wash.
  • It Is Easy.  I love that the spray mechanism is integrated into the mop so that you can spray and scrub at the same time.  I also love the control it gives me to spray more solution on areas where there have been big spills.
This mop was a big hit with my boys, too.  They were actually fighting over who got to use it first.  Two kids fighting over who will clean the floors?  SWOON.

  9. My best idea to date has been to put up a shelf that has many hooks right by the front door. It was $3 at a yard sale and we painted it and hung it in a very small space. It's actually below waist level, so you would think it's too small of a space, but it works perfectly for backpacks and coats for the little ones.

    b) Every night, we have a "return it" dance party. During the course of one song, everything that is in the living room/kitchen/bathroom/hallway but doesn't belong there gets returned. It doesn't necessarily get put away nicely, but at least toys and clothes are in the right room--makes it easier to clean if you aren't returning stuff.

  100. I've lowered my definition of clean with each family expansion. Add a husband? the bathroom can go 1.5 weeks between cleanings. Add a daughter? The kitchen floor can be considered clean if i get the dried food off the floor with a sponge. Add a son? Remove all objects that collect dust from the house to return when I have more time....

In addition, I absolutely always make my kids (2 and 4) take their toys to their playroom downstairs at the end of every day. No toys on the main level of our house makes it easier to accomplish some light cleaning at night before bed.

The best tip someone gave to me was an easy way to clean the inside of your microwave - - all you do is place a microwave safe bowl full of water in the microwave and turn on high for 3-4 mins. After that, simply wipe away all the spatters and spills with little or now effort.

  176. This affects a household, so I'm putting it. To get rid of fruit flies, take a paper cup, place ripe fruit in the bottom, over top with plastic wrap and secure with rubber band. Then pock a few smalls holes in the top (just a little bigger then a fruit fly). The flies will go for the fruit and can't get out. You just throw away the cup when done.
